Ottawa, ON (November 10, 2023) – Sport Climbing will make its debut at the Canada Games for the Québec 2027 Canada Winter Games. The sport has been selected by the 2027 Host Society, alongside freestyle skiing. This is a major milestone in the sport’s development, allowing Sport Climbing to be showcased on a national multi-sport platform, and providing a new competitive opportunity to our athletes.
The Canada Games brings together more than 2,000 able-bodied athletes and athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities for the largest amateur multi-sport event in the country. Alternating between winter and summer, they span over 30 different sports to showcase the very best in Canadian sport and spirit.
“The Canada Games are an important step in the athlete’s development pathway,” says Christiane Marceau, executive director of CEC. “The Canada Games are often the first experience an athlete will have in a multi-sport major game, which will prepare them for PanAmerican Games and Olympic Games.”
“It’s a decision that will have a major impact on the recognition of our sport, both provincially and nationally, and we’re proud to be working with the CEC to host the Canada Games, welcoming the beginnings of climbing here in Quebec City.” says Matthieu Des Rochers, Sport Director with the Fédération Québécoise de la Montagne et de l’Escalade (FQME).
Details have not been determined as to which discipline(s) and categories will be included in the games. We are excited to be working with the 2027 Canada Winter Games Host Society and local partners to develop an exceptional sport program for our athletes.
The 2027 Canada Winter Games will take place from February 26 to March 15, 2027 in Québec city, marking a return to the birthplace of the Canada Games 60 years after the inaugural event held in 1967.
